Instructor: Beth VanDeWater

Welcome to Los Corazones.  A space, a place, and a mindset where we will create a heart from wool fabric and your own expression of love or pain threaded into design with embroidery.  All you need to bring is yourself, a writing journal and pencil.

I will help you cut out and sew your heart together.  You will learn new and perhaps familiar embroidery stitches.  We will explore conversations of what it is like to walk this world and time as a women.  A complex energized epoch where our conversations and time together are powerful pivots for developing community and strength.  Come be a part of a circle of women creating bonds, if only for a brief period of time, in a traditional sewing circle—a historic space for women to gather.

After the initial class, you are welcome to join me in the Annex to work on your piece each Tuesday, 1-2:30pm, to recreate the tradition of slowing down and creating.

I look forward to working with you.

About the Instructor:

I am a Colorado native with a passion to seek the hidden beauty and the extraordinary change makers of the world. I believe art can drive movements, tell stories, and shift perspectives. My hope is that my work will be a part of the current fighting for equality.  Also, a part of the voice of nature begging us to wake up and protect it.

I work with metal, textiles, paints, and ceramic.  Each medium allows me to create a physical object that tells a piece of a very personal story of what it is like to be a woman walking this earth at this time in history.  It is complicated, painful, celebratory and hopeful.  I hope my work resonates with many women fighting to be seen and desiring to manifest power in a world dominated by patriarchy.  I hope the work instigates conversations and develops communities which will somehow, someway instruct change.

Beth will be TNL's next artist in residence and will have her work, 'Los Corazones', on view at The New Local Annex October 20th thru December 30th.
